Another Spring Equinox

Ostara, or Spring Equinox, arrives on March 20th this year – how may we honour this time?

In my book Another Spring: A Year of Self Therapy & Spiritual Practices (available Christmas 2025), I offer psycho-spiritual strategies and practices for the entire archetypal human year, and Ostara (Spring Equinox) is no exception. I use the archetypal human year for the structure of my book because our bodies respond to sunlight and its variations throughout the year, affecting our mood, our momentum, our desire for healing, and for our seasonal psycho-spiritual challenges.

Here’s a revised excerpt from my book that I would like to share with you now:

At Spring Equinox in my part of the world the herring are running, spring crocuses and snow drops are up … tulip noses test the air. I plant some early seeds, do another cleanse of my home to make room for new ideas and growth, and donate many good quality pieces to local charities.

I add some traditional Celtic (Earth Based) symbols of birth, fertility, new beginnings, balance, pregnancy, and hope to my outdoor altar: buds, seed pods, eggs, spring flowers like crocuses, violas, and primulas, and images of baby animals like lambs, bunnies, and chicks.

I also create an Ofrenda at my house altar, even though this beautiful display of flower petals and seeds is usually reserved for early November (Dia de los Muetros, after Samhain). I invite you to enjoy this process because the results are simply beautiful.

For your ritual, think about what has lain dormant in your personal growth and what might be ready to ‘sprout’ into action. Meditate and reflect upon or pray at your indoor or outdoor altar (or both) for the courage to nurture your own growth.
